Meet Our Staff
Jana Tucker, Office Manager — Jana is originally from Durham, relocated to Sanford in 2013. She has worked in the dental field for the last 17 years as a scheduling coordinator, now office manager. She is highly regarded for her compassionate personality and truly cares about the patient’s needs. She believes the most important thing is for each person to feel comfortable and welcome whenever they call or come into the office for an appointment.
She spends her time away from work with her beautiful daughter, significant other and his son. She enjoys working in the yard, renovating and remodeling homes, and loves going to the beach with her family.
Carrie Simmons, Dental Assistant — Carrie is from Kings Mountain (little town south of Charlotte), North Carolina. She moved to Willow Springs after graduating high school. She graduated Wake Tech Dental Assisting program in 2013 and thereafter received her CDA. In October of the same year, she married her husband, Matt.Carrie has always had a passion for dentistry. She believes a beautiful smile is important. She enjoys working with patients to assist them to achieve and maintain great dental health. Her favorite part about her role in dental healthcare is getting to know her patients and their families.
When Carrie is not at the office working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and family. She loves playing the piano and spending time outdoors. Trips to the beach are her favorite! On the weekends she spends her time attending church with family and relaxing.
Julie Boney, Dental Assistant — Julie is originally from Southbury Connecticut and moved to Holly Springs back in 2005. Before moving down to NC, she earned a Bachelors degree from Plymouth State University and a Masters degree from Southern CT State University in the field of Human Physiology and Exercise Science/Nutrition. After working in the health field for over 20 years, she decided to go back to school to earn her certificate in Dental Assisting.
She has experience working with people of all ages and enjoys helping people and making a difference in their lives. She has had an interest in dentistry for many years and was so excited to have the opportunity to make the career change. Having been working with people in healthcare for a while now, she knows how important it is to have proper and consistent dental care for overall well-being and is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience.
Julie is married with two children and when she is not working she is relaxing and spending time with her family. She enjoys the outdoors and likes to walk, run, hike, bike, and play sports such as basketball and soccer.
Courtney Jackson, Dental Assistant — Courtney is a lifelong resident of Sanford, NC. She has two children that she adores. Her son is an avid baseball player which she enjoys watching him play. She graduated from Lee Senior High school in 2001 and went on to Central Carolina Community college and earned her Associates degree in Early Childhood Education. She has worked with children for the past 16 years.
She most recently earned her Dental assisting certification including Dental Radiography certification.
In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach or lake; she loves to fish and ride four-wheelers.
Andrea Smith, Registered Dental Hygienist — Though originally from Idaho, Andrea loves living in North Carolina. She graduated with Honors with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene at Idaho State University. Andrea is a Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society member and served two years as a Dental Hygiene Advocate AmeriCorps service member. AmeriCorps is a domestic peace-corps network of volunteer service members seeking to meet public health needs. Some of her service experience involved working with mobile dental units in elementary schools and implementing positive oral health changes in assisted living centers.
Andrea is passionate about oral health promotion and disease prevention. She loves the opportunity at Avent Ferry Family Dentistry to provide treatment to patients and encourage them in making changes related to oral and systemic health.
She and her husband welcomed their daughter in 2017 to their family. Andrea loves repurposing furniture, shopping at second-hand stores, and doing Yoga and Pilates.
Julie Sawvel, Registered Dental Hygienist — Julie is originally from West Jefferson, NC but has lived locally for around 18 years. In 2017, she graduated from Wake Technical Community College with her degree in Dental Hygiene. Julie is currently active in the American Dental Hygienist Association and loves to volunteer at dental clinics.
Julie has been passionate about dentistry from a young age. She hopes she can make each patient feel welcome and excited about his or her oral health. Most of all, she feels it is important to get to know her patients and make them feel at home. In her free time, Julie likes to hang out with her family, friends, and spend time outdoors.
She recently got married in September of 2017 to her husband Matt and they have a precious dog together named Lilo. In her spare time Amanda enjoys going to the beach with her family, going to church, hiking, running, yoga and gardening. Amanda is also passionate about traveling and experiencing other cultures she has visited five of the seven continents and over seventeen different countries! Her most memorable experience traveling was when she studied abroad in Thailand in undergrad at UNC.
She is excited to start her new career at Avent Ferry Family Dentistry and looks forward to meeting you and your family soon!
Somer Thornburg, Front Office Coordinator — Somer is a lifelong Sanford, NC resident who also lived in Wilmington, NC for several years while she attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. At UNCW she earned a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and a bachelor’s degree in Geography. She returned to Sanford after graduating to settle down and start a family. Somer has over 8 years of medical office experience, working in primary care and optometry. She is new to the dental field and loves that she is learning more about dentistry every day. A passion of hers is working with all types of patients from a variety of backgrounds and meeting new people. She lives by the simple philosophy to treat others as you would want them to treat you and a friendly face with a warm smile goes a long way.
In her spare time Somer loves playing golf, reading, continuing her education, visiting the beautiful NC coast or mountains, and spending time with her husband and son.
